The Printmaking Process

Linoleum, or linocut, block printing is my specialty. While the design might look simplistic in the end, the process is quite involved.

  • Cedar Beach block at drawing stage.

    Draw

To start, I create a reference image and horizontally reverse it on my computer. Then, I trace out the design on a linoleum block. I don't put in too many details, just enough to get a basic outline.

  • Carving out an early layer of the Arch Rock print.

    Carve

Then, I carve out everything that I don't want to be printed. For a one-color print, I carve out the white space. In a multicolor print, I'm carving each color layer. I utilize a variety of detailed carving patterns to create the illusion painterly textures, depth and gradients.

  • Printing the Mini Mighty Mac print.

    Print

When the block is ready, I roll ink onto the block and pull it through my 15" etching press or hand burnish it with a baren. I repeat this process of carving and printing for each color in a multicolor print, working from lightest color to the darkest.
