Handmade, Layer by Layer

The Art of Reduction Printmaking

At Peninsula Prints, each original design begins with a simple idea and transforms into something rich with texture, color, and history.

My specialty is reduction linoleum block printing, a traditional relief printmaking process where every color is carved and printed by hand.

Even though multiple originals are made, this isn’t mass-produced art; each original print is crafted with intention, patience, risk and play.

  • Cedar Beach block at drawing stage.

    Draw

The process begins with a reference image that captures a moment or place I want to honor. I then reverse the design digitally and transfer it to a linoleum block - starting with just enough detail to guide the carving.

  • Carving out an early layer of the Arch Rock print.

    Carve

Once the design is on the block, I begin carving. For a single-color print, that means removing everything that should stay white. With multi-color pieces, each new layer requires careful carving to preserve the colors already printed and make room for the next. It’s where texture, depth, and gradient begin to take shape.

  • Printing the Mini Mighty Mac print.

    Print

After carving, I ink the block and run it through a 15″ etching press (or hand-burnish it when appropriate). I then repeat the cycle of carving and printing - usually working from the lightest color to the darkest - until the image is complete.

Each piece is truly limited.

Because the block is carved away with each layer, the exact image can never be made again. Small variations make every print from an edition truly one of a kind.

Color & texture you can feel.

The layered carving on 100% cotton paper creates gradients and texture that can’t be achieved with digital printing or flat ink layers. The result is depth, richness, and a handcrafted feel you can see and touch.

Craftsmanship over convenience.

Unlike modern reproductions or digitally printed art, this method demands planning, patience, and precision - the mark of fine printmaking.
